[EN] The commotion in the media and politics about the “multicultural drama” shows again how important and topical this subject is for the role of the media and journalists. The report goes in on the journalistic responsibility and the role that journalists play in the Dutch multicultural democracy. Multiculturalism is divided into three layers; knowledge, representation and responsibility.
[DU] De commotie in met name de media en de politiek rondom het ‘multiculturele drama’, zoals dit verwoord werd door publicist Paul Scheffer in het NRC Handelsblad van 29 januari 2000 heeft onder meer laten zien hoe actueel en belangrijk deze maatschappelijke kwestie is voor de (rol van de) media en journalisten in Nederland. In dit essay wordt de discussie die in de media en de wetenschap wordt gevoerd ten aanzien van de multiculturalisering van de samenleving ontleed in termen van hoe journalisten om (kunnen) gaan met deze brede en complexe thematiek. Multiculturaliteit – hier opgevat als verzamelterm voor culturele diversiteit en het groeiend besef daarvan in alle lagen van de samenleving – is daartoe op drie niveaus te onderscheiden: kennis, representatie en verantwoordelijkheid.
