The Catholic Church has pledged continued support to the needy within its Torit Diocese. The Vicar General in charge of the Diocese, Fr. Celestino Muras, has said the church would strive to improve the lives of the local people besides its pastoral work.“We will continue to focus on the pastoral work which embraces participation of people in Eucharistic celebration and the strength of Christian participation,” he said.

Fr. Muras was speaking during a press conference after concluding a four day Annual General Meeting organized for pastoral agencies and parish priests at Fr. Saturlino Ohure Hall in Torit.

The four-day meeting was aimed at reviewing the activities and reports of the previous year’s programmes from the eighteen parishes and three Eucharistic centers in the Torit Diocese.

The Catholic Diocese of Torit is a great contributor to the socio-economic and health  services in the region. It provides basic services such as health, water and education needed by people in Eastern Equatoria state. It runs two hospitals and eighteen health centres among other facilities across the state. The programmes in the Diocese are planned to respond to the social needs of the community.

The Vicar General said that in order to complete pastoral work, the meeting evaluated its performance in the past year and its constraints, and resolved to improve this year as South Sudan heads to Nationhood.

He said the Annual General meeting discussed important concerns of the Diocese, adding that the meeting came up with some practical resolutions to solve problems facing the local communities.

He said the Catholic Diocese of Torit was appealing to development partners in the region to assist schools that were recently hit by floods. He said the government should respond quickly to the problems facing its citizens instead of waiting until it was too late.
