Journalists looking to improve their coverage on Islam can enrol in a free online course.

News University, the Poynter Institute e-learning project, announces “Covering Islam in America.”

The self-directed course will provide a background of Islam, reporting strategies to give stories context and tips on finding additional sources.

Additional topics include diversity of religious expression, Muslim women and Islam and the black community.

Lawrence Pintak, founding dean of the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University, and former foreign correspondent Stephen Franklin are the course instructors.

The Social Science Research Council covered the US$25 course fee, making it free to the public.
