Two workshops highlighting the importance of media in helping to strengthen civil society and building intercultural understanding and dialogue as Egypt edges towards full democracy have been organised in Cairo and Alexandria by Media Diversity Institute.

The workshops, held between 19-24 January, were organised for academics working in state and private journalism institutes. They helped frame teaching cources for reporting diversity by media still in the process of transition only a year after a popular uprising swept away the autocratic regime of President Hosni Mubarak.

The first of the 2-day Reporting Diversity Curricula Development workshops, in Alexandria, was attended by academics from state and private journalism institutes in Alexandria, Minya, Sohag, and Tanta, and the second in Cairo and included academics from Assuit, Cairo and Mansoura.

“The country is at a critical moment and these workshops identified the ways journalism education could contribute to the more inclusive post-revolutionary Egyptian society,” said MDI Director Milica Pesic.

MDI is to follow up the work by offering targeted support for at least three of the participating academics who plan to develop and teach their own Reporting Diversity modules, as a follow up. The workshops were supported by the Swedish International Development Agency.
