Three competitions for the best coverage of vaccines and immunisations have been launched by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in partnership with the African Health Journalists Association and the Arab Media Forum.
Journalists are invited to submit stories related to diseases that are preventable or treatable with vaccines, such as polio, measles and pneumonia. Eligible stories must have appeared in a print, broadcast or online media in Sub-Saharan Africa, Pakistan and the Gulf states between 15 March and 15 May 2013, which includes World Immunization Week (24-30 April). Submitted work may include feature articles, in-depth, investigative or explanatory stories, multimedia reports, documentaries or discussion programs.
The three associations want to reward stories that are well-researched and well-written and encourage those that use data, mapping and citizen voices to support their coverage. “We are especially looking for stories that use innovative tools and techniques to engage or reach the public, such as Facebook chats, Twitter feeds, or the use of text messaging to solicit citizen reports on the spread of preventable diseases,” the ICFJ website reads.
Top winners of each contest will be awarded a cash prize and a two-week study tour in the USA for a meeting with international health experts in Washington D.C. and Seattle.
Submissions will be accepted until 20 May.
