Choosing a debate forum

Click on the ‘Categories’ tab to view the debate forums. There are two debate forums to choose from:

 

• The ‘Media Diversity Institute Debate Forum’ contains debates or ‘topics’ which have been started by the Media Diversity Institute, that is, by MDI experts and staff. You can express your opinion on the debates here but, you cannot start your own debates.
• The ‘Community Debate Forum’ contains debates or ‘topics’ initiated by members of the media & diversity community. Here you can initiate your own debates on subjects or issues you are interested in, or comment on existing debate topics created by other members of the community.

 

How do I participate in a debate?

1. Choose the debate forum you are interested in, as described above, to view the topics being discussed.
2. Choose a debate (known as ‘threads’ or ‘topics’) you are interested in from the list.
3. Click on the ‘REPLY TOPIC’ button at the top or end of the debate in order to leave a comment.
4. Type a title for your comment in the ‘subject’ field and then type your comment on the debate in the ‘message’ field.
5. Tick the box in the ‘subscribe’ field if you want to be notified by email about replies to this debate.
6. Finally click ‘submit’ to add your comment to the debate.

 

How do I start a new debate? 

1. Choose the ‘Community Debate Forum’, as described above.
2. Click on the ‘NEW THREAD’ button.
3. Type a title for the debate in the ‘subject’ field and then in the ‘message’ field, introduce the debate you would like to initiate. It is best to provide brief background information about the subject you wish to debate and pose a question or questions which others can then respond to.
4. Tick the box in the ‘subscribe’ field if you want to be notified by email about replies to this debate.
5. Finally click ‘submit’ to initiate the debate.

 

Other useful things to know

• Click on the ‘Recent Discussions’ tab to see the most recent debates.
• Click on the ‘My Discussions’ tab to see debates you have contributed to.
• Click on the ‘Categories’ tab to see all debate forums and topics.
• Click on the ‘My Profile’ tab to view your profile information and what others will be able to see about you.
• Click on a user’s name in any of the debates to view their profile.
• Click on the ‘Rules’ tab to view the rules associated with using the debate forum.
