The Media Diversity Institute is organizing a roundtable debate under the theme ‘Media between freedom and ethical responsibility’, on 2 May 2012, in Rabat, Morocco, on the eve of World Press Freedom Day, within the framework of its project ‘Media Evolution: Towards an Inclusive, Responsible & Independent Media in Morocco’.
At the debate, leading international and Moroccan experts, media professionals, government officials and civil society representatives will discuss the issue of press freedom vis-a-vis the media’s ethical responsibilities.
Speakers include: Jean-Paul Marthoz, Senior Adviser for the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and vice-chair of the Europe and Central Asia division of Human Rights Watch; Jamal Eddine Naji, International Media Expert; and Ben Aissa Asloun, Professor at ISIC.
The event is organized in collaboration with the Moroccan Centre for Research on Human Rights and the Media, and with the financial support of the European Union Delegation in Rabat, Fondation Hanns Seidel, and UNESCO Rabat.
It is one of 5 round table debates, among many other activities, including training for journalists and NGOs, and TV programmes, that will be organised during the life of the project.
The objectives of the project are to encourage a public debate on the future of the Moroccan media, ensure greater coverage of social diversity in the media, improve freedom of expression and access to information, ensure greater responsibility by the media through self-regulation, and improve respect of media freedom by the government.
