Migrants & Journalists To Team Up on TV & Radio Production Course in Greece

Migrants and journalists will team up on TV & radio production course called “Migrant Voices”, aimed at promoting inclusive journalism, social integration, and combating discrimination. The course is being jointly organised by the Media Diversity Institute, Symβiosis and the Thessaloniki Municipality Media, and will be held in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 14 – 23 May 2012.

During the course, 8 members of the migrant community and 8 mainstream journalists will be paired into 8 teams to produce TV and radio stories on diversity in Thessaloniki, that address the issues faced by migrants as well as the challenges for communities posed by living together. They will search for interesting and illustrative stories in their local schools, neighbourhoods, working environments and ordinary daily life.

The programmes will be broadcast on the local TV and radio stations. The municipality of Thessaloniki operates three radio stations and a television network. The migrant participants will learn the journalism skills needed to produce regular stories for the local TV and radio stations. The journalists, as well as mentoring the migrants during the course, will learn about the issues facing the migrant community. All the participants will get the unique and invaluable opportunity to exchange experiences, work together and understand diversity through practice.

The course is being organised within the framework of the Ethical Journalism Initiative conducted by the International Federation of Journalists in cooperation with the Media Diversity Institute and ARTICLE 19 which aims to improve media coverage of ethnicity, race, religion and migration issues throughout the EU, and is funded by the European Commission.
