This essay desribes the outcome of a comparative study which was carried out to examine “the role of media in children’s make-believe worlds” in Germany, Israel, the United States and South Korea. Television often serves as primary medium for children’s fantasies and offers material for their make-believe worlds.
Yet these fantasies are only evoked if the world depicted is congruent with that of the child’s. As children often adopt clichés presented to them via media uncritically, the authors call for the media’s awareness of the contents which they convey.
